Mixbus gives this instant overview of levels, compression, sends. Gives me possibilities to change the colour independently Gives some more room when loud, and more intimacy when soft. I send the uncompressed signal to vocal fx like reverb. Can be done post fader in the channel: but is not elegant.

Second stage i use a compressor to tame expression by the singer. I use the leveler for compensating the movement of the singer, the distance to the mike.ĭuring the recording unwanted level changes, i already have compensated with the fader. Rather solve the problem with the standard tools. I am not so into these problem solving tools, like Vocal rider. Better to have SSL from waves it compliments Harrison for Drum very well. I have a respect to waves but vocal rider is not my cup of tea. I believe it is two compressor in one, upward and downward compressor. If I were to only use one it would be the later one. It just kind of helps keep the vocal right up front 100% of the time. Maybe 2-3 leds lit up at the loudest parts.

I also tend to limit how much the fader can drop, but still allow it a good bit of headroom for any soft parts.īut then I do use the mixbus leveler. But I want the level of the vocal to be as close to perfect as possible. Sometimes that means going back and adding a little more compression before it. this instance I want to try and set to really get the level as natural as possible.

Haven't been doing it this way in mixbus. In PT I would side chain this instance so the vocal stays above the music. And while I do usually use some kind of compression in here it's still pretty light. Then I eq/compress/de-ess/anything else I think the vocal needs. I also normally give it a pretty big range. Not worried about side chaining at this point. I also set the "parked" level in the -3 to -6 dB range. I pay special attention to get the thresh hold just right to where when the singer quits the fader "parks". Vocal rider (live) set up in fast mode, more like a gate. Along with the singer holding/moving the mic closer and further away. And keep in mind I'm mostly doing live concert mixing.

Used side chaining in pro tools all the time.Īnyway on lead vocals I tend to use this chain. However I've yet to set up side chaining in mixbus. Vocal rider is an automated fader, that can use the track it's inserted on and/or a side chain input to determine how it works. The leveler in Mixbus is simply a compressor.
